Food places around the Colosseum and Eating when you visit the Colosseum
Eating when you visit the Colosseum will be easy since there are a bevy of restaurants to choose from. Next to the Colosseum you can find “food and drink stands” that offer a quick to go sandwich or a refreshing cold water bottle. A snack bar next to the “Colosseo” Metro station also offers some chair and tables to rest your feet. There are many restaurants near colosseum rome.
To the side of the Colosseum you have a couple of seated eating places with a view on the Colosseum. Please remember: these are tourist places and what counts is the view. Also, I would like to mention that the tram stop is right next to those restaurants and you’ll have the tram passing right beside you if you’re eating outside.
That day, I tried a new place to eat and I wanted to try one of the restaurants on the other side of the street from the Colosseum; a place from where I could have my lunch and have the view to the historical Colosseum. It’s called:
Royal Art Cafe – Piazza del Colosseo, 1 – 00184 Rome
There’s a couple of more places to eat I’d like to mention that I saw walking up the steps when you walk towards the hop on-hop off bus stop. It’s to your right as soon as you are on the top of the stairs and pass the souvenir stand. It has the view to the Colosseum plus: no tram stop!
The first one is called “La Biga” – Via Nicola Salvi, 65 – 00184 Colosseo Rome You’ll get everything from Pasta to Panini and all kind of different sandwiches. Some tables have a better view and you”ll have less trees covering the Colosseum.
The second one is called “Oppio Caffe’” – Via delle Terme di Tito, 72 – 00184 Colosseo Rome
It’s a modern place that serves sandwiches, pasta and small snacks. I think they have a really great offer for parents with kids because every day from 12.00PM-3.00PM Oppio Caffe’ offers a kid’s meal for FREE. The menu changes day by day. Also, Oppio Caffe’ has an ALL YOU CAN EAT Buffet from 5.00PM-9.00PM for 10.00 euro served with a drink. The view on the Colosseum is a bit covered with trees but it can look quite romantic when the wind blows through the leaves.
For REAL authentic Italian food, I strongly advise you to go further into the Monti area – the neighborhood next the Colosseum is called like this. Just go further beyond the streets of the first row of restaurants facing the Colosseum. You’ll find many wine bars and restaurants. A very good authentic Italian restaurant is:
Hostaria Isidoro al Colosseo – Via S. Giovanni in Laterano, 59a – 00184 Rome
A historic Italian restaurant that offers roman cuisine, open for lunch and dinner. Price/quality matches and the service is quick and the staff is friendly.
If you’re looking for something more modern but still fantastic food go to:
Caffe’ Propaganda – Via Claudia, 15 – 00184 Rome
Only a stone throw away from the Colosseum starts via Claudia. Just follow that road and you’ll find the place after 300 meters. Caffe’ Propaganda is a trendy restaurant open for lunch and dinner. Eating in Italy with the “French touch”! The food is very tasty and the Cocktails are prepared with only fresh ingredients. In the afternoon you can enjoy a cup of tea and some fantastic sweats.
If you’re craving for something super delicious, let’s say an ice-creme or crepe in between; go to the street Via S. Giovanni in Laterano right off the Colosseum to the ice-creme parlor
Cremeria Don Pepe’ – Via S. Giovanni in Laterano, 40 – 00184 Rome
I always leave the best for the end so here it goes: if you want the best view, the best service and the best cuisine in the most romantic restaurant which serves fantastic food that makes your heart beat faster and at the same time faces the Colosseum; I would strongly recommend to make reservations in the
Aroma Toproof Restaurant – Via Labicana, 125 – 00184 Rome
Just to let you know, it won the “Star Diamond Award 2012” from the American Academy of Hospitality Sciences.
